"Empowering Communities, Transforming Lives"

The Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) is a Non-governmental Organisation formed 1987 and registered in 1995 as an NPO (Section 21 Company). It is currently enjoying a Public Benefit Organisation status (in terms of the Income Act ), with a mandate of providing  sustainable socio-economic development initiatives to alleviate the negative impact of  poverty, unemployment and inequality for former mine workers and their communities in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and recently in Botswana.

The mission of the Mineworkers Development Agency is to create brighter futures and it measures progress by the number of new livelihoods it creates in areas of endemic poverty. MDA projects build self-reliance and assure food security. To maximise the impact of various interventions, the agency typically works in tandem with corporate CSI programmes, NGOs and foreign donors.

The MDA achieves these objectives through four key strategic socio economic initiatives, these include Food Security and Poverty Alleviation Programme, Training (Upskilling and Re-skilling), Enterprise Development and Occupational Health and Compensation Programmes. Which places the MDA in an ideal position to handle the community and stakeholder relations aspect of the project, utilising existing networks within the district municipal area and in the mining industry.
